BGM on Drones

Wednesday, January 27th the Greater Binghamton Airport hosted a public information meeting to discuss one of the newest forms of air technology; UAV s, also known as drones! This presentation was held for hobbyists to reinforce the safe practices and rules that come with the growing UAV industry. The panel, consisting of the Broome County Commissioner of Aviation, Deputy Commissioner of Aviation,  Mike Harris, President/CEO of AgrowDrone and DV Aerial CAM,  along with other industry experts presented with the goal of teaching local hobbyists practices and rules on flight safely when operating UAV in Broome County skies.

The FAA is still developing regulations  and guidelines for UAV operations (See FAA Small UAS Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM)). So keep an eye open for updated information! But for all of our drone hobbyists who couldn’t make it to our presentation, note a few of these tips before you fly!

  • Join a Community Based Organization such as the AMA (www.modelaircraft.org): these organizations provide you with insurance, model aircraft knowledge, peer support and will provide you with even more resources regarding full scale flight.
  • Fly no higher than 400 feet and remain below any surrounding obstacles when possible.
  • Keep your UAV in eyesight at all times, and use an observer to assist.
  • Remain clear of and do not interfere with manned aircraft operations, you must see and avoid other aircraft and obstacles at all times.
  • Do not intentionally fly over unprotected persons or moving vehicles.
  • Remain at least 25 feet away from individuals and vulnerable property.
  • Do not fly near or over sensitive infrastructure or property such as power   stations, water treatment facilities, correctional facilities, heavily traveled roadways, government facilities, etc.
  • Check and follow all local laws and ordinances before flying over private  property.
  • Do not conduct surveillance or photograph persons in areas where there is an   expectation of privacy without the individual’s permission.

These are just a few of the many tips on flying your UAV in Broome County. Wednesday night’s panel did not speculate what will be coming in regards to privacy, location of flight, law enforcement or other issues. However we will update you when this information becomes available. Until then, be safe and if you have any questions contact us regarding safe drone flight!
