United announces flights to Newark Liberty International Airport

(Written By Carl Beardsley Jr.)

In late March, United Airlines announced they will be operating three (3) round-trip flights per day between BGM and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

These three new flights between BGM and EWR, which start in early June, replace the three existing flights between Binghamton and Washington Dulles International Airport currently provided by United.

Usually airports and communities are very excited when an announcement of new air service is made. Service to a new hub airport equates to a new destination along with more connecting flights.

The BGM/EWR service announcement is very different from a typical air service announcement. On one hand, BGM is excited about the new service. On the other hand, we recognize the importance that service to DC has for many travelers in our business community.

Taking a closer look, Newark International Airport offers some significant benefits to local travelers. For example, local air transportation customers gain access to 119 connecting destinations. In addition, EWR is one of United’s largest airport hubs, offering 400 departing flights a day (about 150 more than Washington’s Dulles Airport).

Newark also offers one stop access to an extensive line-up of international destinations including top business destinations in Europe, Asia and South America.

Nonetheless, BGM is still committed to attracting new service to our nation’s capital. We’ve already begun having conversations with our business partners to engage an air service provider that will restore service to the Washington D.C. area.

US Airways has already adjusted their schedules to better connect their morning flight from BGM to Philadelphia (PHL) with a connecting flight to Reagan National Airport in Washington DC, which arrives just after 9:00 am.

Now, it is important to remember that it is a benefit to local air service development efforts to have United’s EWR service be a success. Recognizing this fact, the Airport has already begun promoting EWR to the region.

As such, we are encouraging travelers to use the new service whether it’s to visit the New York City area or to connect to an exciting destination.

The new EWR service schedule would be as follows:

BGM – EWR Schedule
Departure Time           Arrival Time
6:00 am                         7:25 am
11:38 am                       12:57pm
4:53pm                          6:09pm

EWR – BGM Schedule
Departure Time          Arrival Time
9:45 am                         11:10am
3:00pm                          4:25pm
10:00pm                        11:25pm
