Preston Announces Construction of New T-Hangars at BGM

(Maine, NY) — Broome County Executive Debbie Preston today announced the kick-off of a new construction project at the Greater Binghamton Airport. She was joined by Aviation Commissioner Carl Beardsley Jr. and representatives from local Construction Firms.

“The Greater Binghamton Airport continues to land important grants as we work to provide outstanding air service to travelers throughout the Northeast,” said Preston.  “The construction of new T-Hangars will increase revenue and offset costs to our taxpayers, all while local Construction Companies put local people to work.”

Gorick Construction of Binghamton and Boland’s Excavating from Conklin will both be working on this project, which continues to improve the infrastructure of the airfield at BGM.

Today marks the beginning of the first phase of a project that will involve the replacement and expansion of T-hangars used to house private aircraft. Demolition of the current 30-year-old structures will begin immediately to make way for the construction of two new structures that will accommodate 20 aircraft. This will grow the number of aircraft housed at the Airport and increase revenue.

“We are excited to be able to continue improvements to the infrastructure of our community’s transportation resources,” said Beardsley. “This project focuses on the development of General Aviation services at BGM and shows that our operations are diverse and growing.”

General Aviation includes private and corporate aircraft as well as law enforcement, medevac, flight instruction and many other forms of aviation.

The replacement of the T-Hangars at the airport will cost approximately $745,000, of which $600,000 will be covered by NYS Grants. This project runs in conjunction with a North Apron Rehabilitation Project, funded primarily by a Federal Grant. McFarland Johnson of Binghamton completed the design work and will oversee the construction phase, meaning additional jobs for local businesses.

Construction is expected to be completed in mid-December with tenants being in the new hangars by the end of the year.
